Bondi Beach Apartment – Mathieson Architects

Utilising clean lines and a limited palette, Mathieson Architects have transformed what was once an empty shell of a home into a timeless summer retreat for their overseas-based client. The sophisticated penthouse apartment incorporates a wrap-around terrace, and open plan living to harness unobstructed sweeping views of Bondi Beach.

Perched opposite the famous beach, the apartment benefits from a spacious central living area, where clean lines and minimalistic fixtures are blended to complement and infuse the property with the calm nature of beach days.

As described by architect Harlan Redgen “a strong sense of scale, form and materiality are employed to establish a sense of timeless simplicity”. Carefully considered finishes consisting of solid timber, stainless steel and terrazzo flooring are enveloped by white walls, bringing refinement to the central living space.

The apartment’s large open kitchen seamlessly extends to the building’s wrap-around terrace, where a black granite island holds sculptural form in the space, designed as an element of furniture. Oversized glass sliding doors embrace the ocean views, while linen curtains envelop the space with a soft and breezy finish. A timber-clad volume expertly conceals a study, laundry and scullery forming a hierarchy and adding layers in the residence.

Comprised of three bedrooms, the apartment’s private spaces are designed to “embrace the surrounding vibrant neighbourhood” explained the studio. Each room is fitted with a luxurious ensuite and dressing room, where large full-height glass windows are installed to enhance the sweeping ocean views, inviting social and visual experiences into the space.

Stillness and a sense of calm is a key feature, brought about through smart modernist design and “created by the soft envelope of white walls, terrazzo floor, and generosity of light” said Mathieson Architects. Custom-designed furniture crafted in an array of natural materials produces tactile layers of warmth and texture in the space. Blending together to contrast and complement the interior, transforming the once empty space into a clean sophisticated Sydney holiday home.
